Position overview Percent time: Temporary appointments are offered on a course-by-course basis. Anticipated start: Review of applications begins immediately and will continue as needed; appointments will begin in July 2022. Position duration: UC Berkeley Extension course developer appointments are offered for four weeks during the month of July, 2022. UC Berkeley Extension course developer appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. Application Window

Job Summary
UC Berkeley Extension, the professional and continuing education division at the University of California, Berkeley, has partnered with BASIS International and Bilingual Schools China (BIBSC). We are looking for qualified high school teachers and university instructors to develop in-person courses for a youth program in Guangdong, China for the 2022-2023 academic year.

During the summer, course developers collaborate with a UC Berkeley Extension primary instructor to create course materials for undergraduate courses specifically designed for students from 8th to 12th grade.
General Duties
We are seeking qualified applicants who possess current subject matter expertise and/or teaching knowledge in the following subjects/specializations (but not limited to):
Business
  • Business Management
  • Economics
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Marketing and Finance
  • Social Entrepreneurship
Computer Science
  • Intermediate Coding
  • Introduction to Coding and Computer Science
Psychology
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Social Psychology
Physical Sciences
  • Introduction to Astronomy (Modern Cosmology)
  • Introduction to Physics
Teaching Experience
  • Classroom Teaching Experience
  • Synchronous Online Teaching Experience (online lectures via Zoom)
  • Asynchronous Online Teaching Experience (via learning management system)
  • Experience as an Online Course Developer

Course Developer duties include but are not limited to:
  • Complete mandatory training programs by deadlines established by UC Berkeley
  • Collaborate with primary instructor, academic department and/or instructional designer(s) on project deliverables and deadlines, including the course design/roadmap, and learning strategies/activities
  • Assist primary instructor in developing and writing raw original course curriculum and content, including: the course syllabus, learning objectives, lecture segments and scripts, reading assignments, assessments/assignments, discussion prompts, course midterm exam(s) or project(s), final exam(s) or project(s), student instructions, etc.
  • Prepare classroom lesson plans, course materials, lectures/presentations, and design learning assessments
  • Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to fully engage participants and to reinforce student learning
  • Use subject-matter expertise and leverage additional resources appropriately to enhance the curriculum

Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree required.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
  • For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. Due to the part-time, temporary nature of instructor positions, UC Berkeley Extension is unable to provide US visa/work permits for this position.
Preferred qualifications
  • Advanced degree in subject area preferred.
  • 5 or more years of professional and/or academic experience in the course subject.
  • 2 or more years of teaching experience in the course subject at a U.S. high school/college/university institution.
  • Experience in course development, including creating original academic content such as syllabi, learning objectives, lectures/presentations/scripts, learning activities, assignments, assessments, exams, and quizzes.
  • Ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information.
  • Ability to commit time to approximately 10-15 hours a week over 1 month (specific delivery schedule determined by mutual agreement).
  • Ability to participate in regular phone/video conferences M-F between 9am-5pm (USA Pacific Time).
  • Effective verbal/written communication and presentation skills (English).
  • Effective organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and work within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) instructional and other technology, such as: Learning Management Systems (Canvas); online video conferencing (Zoom); Microsoft Office (Word and PowerPoint); file sharing (Google drive or Dropbox); and Google tools (email, calendar, docs, sheets, slides, etc).
